With all the focus on AI, don't forget you still have to run your business

From time to time, I sit quietly and ponder what's going on in my industry, and how it affects what we might do for our Clients.  Like you, I hear and read quite a bit about AI, and the promise it holds.  I don't doubt that AI will help improve our lives in some ways, and I look forward to the positive changes it might enable for us all.

At the same time, I don't want to get caught up in all of the hype, and boy, there's plenty of hype right now.  As I've written before, there have been many hype cycles for new technology that I've seen.  Some of them lived up to the advanced billing; others did not.

I think its important to compartmentalize things.  While AI might be very useful at some point, it's still in its infancy.  And you still have a business to run.  The things that actually pay the bills might not be as flashy as AI, but they are every bit as important, if not more so.

Take running your IT infrastructure.  For years, I've been pointing out that many of you are spending far too much money on this.  If you're still running a 3-tier infrastructure on premises, I can assure you that you're overpaying.  There are technologies that have been available for over 15 years that are better overall than 3-tier, yet most still use 3-tier.  Why?  The answer given is almost always that the cost of change is great, but after 15 years, that cost would have been long amortized.  

We have been a dedicated partner with Nutanix since 2014.  Each Client where we have helped deploy Nutanix has been pleased with the improvement.  Not to mention the simplicity, ability to scale, and lower overall cost.  They're pretty happy with their move to Nutanix.

You'll notice I didn't say anything about AI there.  That's because AI is still something to come for most of us, but our existing business is something that needs care and feeding today.  And, by moving away from 3-tier, you will actually save money that you can re-deploy into your AI initiatives.  

Sure, some might read this and say that it's all self serving, because my company sells Nutanix.  I won't argue that point.  However, if that's all you take from this post, then you're missing the big point.  YOU stand to benefit most of all by moving off 3-tier.
